The Most Overlooked Fundamental
– Back to Articles
Communication, in its essence, is the exchange of ideas and concepts.
Organizations are communication networks that facilitate this exchange.
Anything that interrupts the flow of communication in the group is an enemy to that group. This could be faulty organization structure, confusing policy, poor hiring and training – any number of things.
Behind each of these is the most fundamental interruption to communication: words that are not understood.
Have you ever found yourself reading and you got to the bottom of the page and could not remember what you read on that page? The reason for this is that you have passed words on that page you did not understand. You feel “dopey.” As you continue reading, this dopiness becomes sleep.
This is why many people read before they go to bed. This is why students sleep through class, and the most common reason why orders meet with non-compliance.
If I asked you to peruse this material, you might understand that I am asking you to scan through it or read it briefly. Most people would, as this is their understanding of this word. Actually, the word, “peruse” means “to read for detail; to read thoroughly.”
Discovering the correct definition restores brightness and comprehension, and most importantly the product of communication: agreement and understanding.
Behind all production problems and risks in an organization we find misunderstood words.
The importance of words and their correct meanings is the most overlooked fundamental in our society and in our companies. Correct this and your productivity will soar.
It’s just Common Sense.
